NOVEMBER - DECEMBER CHARITY OF THE MONTH – THE FOOD BANK COALITION OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
The mission of the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County is to work with a network of community partners to alleviate hunger in SLO County and build a healthier community.
1 in 6 SLO County residents deals with food insecurity. The Food Bank Coalition operates out of a 20,000 square-foot warehouse in San Luis Obispo and is able to provide free and nutritious groceries to 30,000 of these individuals per month. We are able to reach this number of people in need through our network of 77 nonprofit partners, 60 monthly neighborhood food distributions, 20 monthly children's farmers markets, and 10 monthly seniors' farmers markets. Half of what we distribute is fresh produce, while the other half is food that meets our nutrition guidelines for saturated fat, sugar, and sodium. In addition to providing food to the community, the Food Bank also provides free nutrition education (cooking demos, recipe ideas, and nutrition lessons) and focuses heavily on reducing local food waste (with programs such as our grocery store rescues and our daily GleanSLO produce rescue harvests).
We receive the support of 3,700 volunteers per year, and 70% of our funding comes from generous individuals and businesses. With $10, the Food Bank can provide a day's worth of food to a family of four. Thank you for supporting us in building a healthier community!
